Aaron Swartz, who helped develop RSS and co-founded Reddit, committed suicide weeks before facing trial on charges of stealing millions of scholarly articles to put them for public use.
He hanged himself in his Brooklyn apartment. As a young teenager, he helped create RSS, a group of Web feed formats to gather updates from blogs, news headlines, audio and video for users. He co-founded Reddit and later sold it to Conde Nast, as well as Demand Progress, which campaigns against Internet censorship.
The federal government had accused Swartz of using the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's computers to steal nearly 50 lakh articles taken from more than 1,000 academic journals. His trial was to begin next month and had he been, convicted, he would have been slapped a prison term and a fortune in fines.
