The Jodhpur district court has rejected the bail plea of the self-styled godman Asaram Bapu. Asaram is currently in jail for allegedly assaulting a minor girl sexually. Earlier, the court had sent him to judicial custody till September 15.
The prosecution had opposed the bail plea saying that the investigations could be affected if a bail was granted. The prosecution told the court that Asaram had tried to influence the police and, in view of this, he may further try to influence the investigation if the bail application was considered.
Additional advocate general Anand Purohit told the court that two persons named in the FIR — Shilpi (hostel warden at Chhindwara Gurukul) and Sharad (gurukul caretaker) — were on the run and their interrogation was necessary to complete the probe. He also justified the registration of the FIR in Delhi instead of Jodhpur, saying that the girl initially did not tell her parents when her parents came to know about the incident, they moved to Delhi to confront Asaram.
When Asaram refused to meet them, the girl's father lodged a case with a local police station in Delhi. After the arguments, the court refused to grant bail to Asaram in view of the serious charges, which are non-bailable. The victim studied at Asaram's ashram at Chhindwara where the girls' hostel warden and an attendant scared her that she was being possessed by evil spirist and asked her parents to take her to the godman for treatment.
