For 18 years, Ramachandra Das ignored all else to work like a man on a mission to cut a road through the mountain. It was difficult to commute earlier so he thought of carving out a road. Movement in 10 villages has become feasible now only due to this road.
Inspired by another Gaya resident who had dug up a mountain to create a road, Das took to this seemingly impossible task in 1993, which has reduced the distance by 25 kilometres. Initially, the villagers ridiculed him, some even calling him bad. But as the road began to take shape, the entire village started rallying behind him. Ramachandhra has earned the goodwill of many but at a cost. While he was busy with his mission, his wife had to fend for herself and children.
