A 27-year-old jailed convict at the Yerawada Central Prison has written to the Bombay High Court, complaining of the many obesity-linked health problems. Atmaram Dengle has requested a 90-day parole to undergo the weight reduction surgery. Currently, he weighs 145 kg.
Dengle was involved in the infamous Ahmednagar sex scandal that led to the arrest of 20 people in April 2012, who were convicted for raping a minor. The letter also highlights his ailments including asthma, breathlessness, blood clots, coagulation, high blood pressure and fluctuating sugar level. Dengle has also mentioned that the prison CMO had stated that the required treatment was not offered at any government hospital, and therefore he should get admitted to either Lilavati Hospital in Bandra or Ruby Hall Hospital in Pune city.
A trial court had initially sentenced Dengle to life imprisonment but later, the Bombay High Court commuted it to 8 years. All the 20 accused were charged with abducting and raping a minor after luring her with money.
