Finally, it’s freedom from the gallows for 17 jailed youth from Punjab and Haryana, who were imprisoned in the UAE on the charges of killing a man in a bootlegging brawl. They landed at the Delhi airport after they were released by a court after the blood money had been paid to the kin of the deceased.
After reaching Delhi this morning they headed straight for Amritsar to offer prayers at the Golden Temple.
The Indian men had all along maintained that they were not involved in the murder of the Pakistani national and that they had been framed. Dubai-based hotelier SP Singh Oberoi campaigned to collect money from charity and well-wishers for the blood money and secure their freedom. A Sharjah court released them after payment of blood money of over Rs.5.5 crore (compensation to the victim's family).
