The Supreme Court has set aside the Kerala High Court's order acquitting 35 accused in the Suryanelli gangrape case of 1996, in which a teenaged-old girl was gangraped for over 40 days. The court has asked the Kerala High Court to take a fresh look at the case.
The court passed the order on an appeal by the State of Kerala, which had challenged the acquittal of the accused in the case. Notably, the Kerala High Court had acquitted 35 persons who had been convicted earlier by a special court in September 2000.
The high court had found only one person guilty of sex trade and sentenced him to 5 years in jail and a fine of Rs.50,000. The girl from Suryanelli in Idukki of Kerala was kidnapped in January 1996 and was taken from place to place across Kerala.
