Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced cashless treatment for road accident victims. Initially, the scheme will be introduced in the highway connecting Gurgaon, Japipur and Vadodara. Addressing the nation in his All India Radio address "Mann Ki Baat", he referred to a latest accident in Delhi where a speeding car hit a scooterist, who lay on road unattended for 10 minutes. He died later due to late treatment.
This service will be also be expanded to Mumbai, Ranchi, Ranegaon highways. Also, there are services like national toll-free number 1033 to report an accident and call ambulance. However, he also called for greater awareness about road safety to avoid road accidents. Presenting disturbing statistics on road accidents, he said there is an accident every minute and every four minutes, a person is killed in a road accident. The government also plans to bring a new law Road Transport and Safety Bill.
