V S Gaitonde, known as India's Rothko, has become India's priciest artist. Gaitonde's untitled minimalist landscape in gorgeous yellow was lapped up for Rs 23.7 crore, which breaks the earlier record of Rs 16.4 core set by S H Raza's work 'Saurashtra' in 2010. Though not as well known as his contemporaries like M F Husain, F N Souza, Mehta and Raza, Gaitonde has been getting recognition worldwide as a pioneer of abstract art.
The occasion was Christie's first auction held in India and the evening in Mumbai saw eight Indian artists achieve a world record price. An iconic work from Tyeb Mehta's 'Mahisasura' series sold for Rs 17.5 crore.
