Umakant Mishra was sacked from his postman's job on the charge of pocketing Rs 57.60 almost 29 years ago. After a three decade-long court battle, he has now been acquitted. But his life has been shattered beyond belief as the decision offers him no relief. He has lost three decades of his life for nothing and he is not in a position to rebuild it now.
At the time of the alleged offence, he was working in Kanpur when in 1984, a case of pocketing a money order for Rs 57.60 was registered against him and he was suspended from the job. He lost not just his livelihood, but also his self respect and honour. With no money or support, he had to attend almost 350 court hearings before he was finally declared innocent. His children also had to suffer humiliation as he had no money to feed and educate them.
There have been vociferous demands for compensation and justice for Mishra for all the sufferings he has gone through in the last three decades.
