An all-women taxi service by the Kerala government to ensure safe travel for women has been rolled out . The 24 x 7 'She Taxi' services are owned and run by women. The and pink-and-white taxis driven by women will be seen zipping around Thiruvananthapuram very soon. The taxis will provide safe travel when violence against women is rising.
Single women travelling late at night do not need to worry as these taxis are available at all times and if in case of a problem, the driver can press a panic button to request police help. The taxis, monitored by a GPS system, can be tracked by the passenger's guardians or friends. So far, five women have offered to run the service started by Gender Park under the Department of Social Justice.
The women drivers have also been taught self defence and the city's women have welcomed the move. The introduction of this service has given relief to many but the Department of Social Justice needs to keep its word of augmenting the number of taxis to 100 and extending it to other places.
