A major train tragedy was averted when a driver-less railway engine travelled at breakneck speed for 6 km on a track in Maharashtra's Chandrapur on Saturday. The engine crashed three gates on the level crossings on the route but there were no casualties. The engine halted on its own on an incline near Mahatardevi village.
The driver Vyankati had got off the engine at the ACC cement plant in Ghugus at 12 pm and left the engine idling as per standard practice but it started moving on the tracky. Vyankati immediately alerted the plant authorities, who reported the matter to the administration before launching a search for the engine. In-house investigators suspect a brake failure as the cause of the incident.
