Nearly 112 people have been confirmed dead and over 100 injured, some of them critically, in a temple stampede at Ratangarh in MP's Datia. The stampede occured due to rumours that a bridge they were crossing was about to collapse. Datia is situated about 390 km from the state capital Bhopal.
The mishap occurred on a bridge, which was rumoured to have collapsed. The large number of devotees there ran helter skelter and the resulting chaos led to the disaster. Some of the devotees are feared to have fallen off the bridge into the river flowing below.
The state government, after getting the nod from the Election Commission, has announced an ex-gratia of Rs.1.5 lakh each to the kin of those killed. An assistance of Rs.50,000 each to the seriously injured and Rs.25,000 each for those who suffering minor injuries in the mishap has also been announced.
