Anti-corrution crusader Anna Hazare and Bollywood diva Vidya Balan led the biggest Indian Independence Day celebrations overseas, with over 2 lakh people carrying the tricolour at an impressive parade which displayed the country’s vibrant culture.Colourful floats, marching bands and cars made their way down the Madison Avenue in Manhattan with revellers enthusiastic people cheering Hazare and Balan.
“Anna Hazare Zindabad” and “Corruption Down Down” filled the air in Manhattan in the annual India Day Parade organised by the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA). Hazare was cheered loudly at every intersection by large numbers and the fragile Gandhian had to be stopped at several intersections, with people wanting to shake hands with him.
The Indian-Americans waved the tricolour at Hazare and shouted that they stood by him in the anti-corruption movement. Hundreds wore orange, green and white dress with a Gandhi cap emblazoned with “I am for Anna” to show support for Hazare. Anna was an instant hit among Americans too, who had joined to see the man. The New York Police Department (NYPD) had a tough time while controlling the unprecedented crowd.
