The controversial Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant has attained criticality i.e. the nuclear reaction has become self-sustaining, thereby producing electricity. The controlled nuclear fission process began at the 1,000 MW unit, the first step towards power production.

As a precautionary measures police have been deployed in and around the plant, which has seen protests over its commissioning. People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy, spearheading the protests has termed AERB’s clearance to the nuclear plant as “authoritarian” and “anti-democratic’’.
