Wipro chairman Azim Premji has become the first Indian to donate half of his personal wealth as part of the 'Giving Pledge' led by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates. The pledge requires the CEOs to donate a major part of their wealth to charity.
After Richard Branson and David Sainsbury, Premji is the third non-American to join the philanthropic club. Earlier, Premji had donated 8.7 % Wipro stock for philanthropy in 2010.
In a letter to the 'Giving Pledge' organization, the tech biz tycoon wrote, "I was deeply influenced by Gandhi's notion of holding one's wealth in trusteeship, to be used for the betterment of society and not as if one owned it".
