To retain valuable corporate talent, Facebook and Apple are going all out to give upto $ 20,000 (Re. 12 lakh) as perks to help employees pay for infertility treatments, sperm donation and freezing their eggs. The move comes as many firms try to diversify their staff to include and appeal to more women.
Facebook has started reimbursing its staff up to $ 20,000 worth of reproductive-related costs, during employment. Apple is going to start it next year. Freezing eggs involves removing a woman's eggs and cooling them to minus temperatures for future use. The viability of a woman's eggs can decline a a little after 27 years before taking a sharp drop around 35. Freezing their eggs gives women an option to focus on career but it can cost more than $10,000, plus storage costs of many hundred dollars a year. Later it costs several thousand dollars to thaw and fertilize the eggs to implant them in the womb.
