After sounding the warning 'Khobradaar USA,’ the polka-dotted Utterly Butterly Amul Girl is ready to butter up the American breakfast tables. The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, owner and marketer of AMUL, will start making ghee, cheese and shrikhand (a sweet dish made of strained yogurt) in a plant near New York. There are around 30 lakh Indians and many more Asians consumers whom AMUL will target initially. AMUL has joined hands with a New Jersey NRI to use his plant for this purpose.
Maintaining its core cooperative structure, GCMMF will procure milk from cooperative dairies in the USA. Currently, it exports items worth Rs 100 crore to the US, West Asia, and Europe, out of which around items worth Rs 35 crore are exported to the USA alone.
For 2013-14, GCMMF is eyeing a turnover of around Rs 18,000 crore, 30 per cent more than last year.
