Bangaru Laxman, the former President of the Bharatiya Janata Party died in Hyderabad following a prolonged illness. The 73-year-old Bangaru had to resign as the BJP president after a Tehelka sting operation and was convicted in 2012. He was on bail and was undergoing treatment for health problems in Hyderabad. The Dalit leader was stung by Tehelka in a defence deal in 2000-2001 in which he was seen taking Rs 1 lakh bribe in a video. At taht time, he was the national president of the BJP and prior to that he served as minister of state for Railways in the NDA government.
Bangaru was sentenced to 4 years in jail after his conviction under the Prevention of Corruption Act for accepting a bribe from a fake arms dealer in the fictitious deal.
