Well-known filmmaker Balu Mahendra died of a cardiac arrest today. Balu Mahendra, 75, suffered a heart attack and was rushed to hospital where he breathed his last. He is survived by his wife and a son. He started his cinematic journey as a cinematographer and later directed some memorable movies including Moondram Pirai and Veedu. He recent venture Thalai Muraigal, which depicts the relationship between a grandfather and his grandson, featured him playing a protagonist.
Balu Mahendra began his career as a cinematographer for ‘Nellu’ in 1974, which earned him the best cinematographer award from the Kerala government. Since then, was chosen the best cinematographer many times and also won the national award for cinematography twice. He was considered a pioneer in innovative camera style for colour in South India besides drawing acclaim for using natural lighting in his frames.
While his movies Veedu and Vanna Vanna Pookkal won the national award for the best feature film in Tamil, Sandhya Raagam won the award for best film on family welfare.
