Vijaydan Detha, a k a Bijji, noted Rajasthani writer and a recipient of the Padma Shri, has passed away. He also received many other awards like the Sahitya Akademi Award and Sahitya Chudamani Award.
He wrote 800 plus short stories, which have been translated into English and other languages. He co-founded Rupayan Sansthan with late Komal Kothari, an institution that documents Rajasthani folklore, arts and music. His literary works include Bataan ri Phulwari (garden of tales), a 14-volume collection of stories that draws on folklore and spoken dialects of Rajasthan. His stories have been adapted for many plays and movies including Habib Tanvir's Charandas Chor, Prakash Jha's Parinati, Amol Palekar’s Paheli, and Mani Kaul's Duvidha.
