The world 's most baffling scientific mystery - chicken or egg - has finally been solved. The chicken came first, scientists say, cracking the puzzle - what came first, the chicken or the egg ? Researchers at Sheffield University have found that the formation of egg shells depends on a protein in the chicken's ovaries, indicating that an egg can exist only if it has been inside a chicken. The protein ovocledidin-17 or OC-17 speeds up the development of the shell. Scientists had to use a super computer to study egg formation. The computer HECToR revealed that OC-17 is crucial in kickstarting the process of crystallisation. The protein coverts calcium carbonate into calcite crystals, which go on to make up the shell.
