In a development typical of the government’s working style, the promise of the low-cost tablet PC Aakash has been dashed to the ground, with the government admitting a production "failure” in its delivery.
The HRD Ministry has written to IIT Bombay to ensure that the vendor (Datawind) meets the conditions and the supply order by March 31, failing which action could be initiated. The ministry also awaits a report from Rajendra Pawar before deciding on the prospects of the device on which many students had pinned their hopes.
Datawind, a Canadian company, was given the orders to supply 1 lakh pieces of Aakash initially, which never happened. The tablet was promised to the students at a highly subsidised rate of Re. 1130.
