All government employees will be provided e-mail accounts for compulsory use in official communication and the use of Internet services provided by external service providers will be prohibited, the Centre has told the Delhi High Court. The Department of Information Technology, rapped by the Court for not fromulating an e-mail policy for government officials, has affirmed that it has a wider consultation process on among stake-holders.
The proposed policy provides for e-mail accounts to all government employees and they will be bound to use it for all official communication. At the same time, the e-mail accounts of external service providers will be prohibited for this purpose to ensure secure access and data usage.
Earlier, the court had strongly lashed at the Centre for its failure to frame the e-mail policy in line with the Public Records Act, saying that sensitive official data cannot be transferred to a server outside India.
