Globally, smartphone shipments rose over 39% last year to 1 billion, helped by a strong demand for low price devices India and China. As per research firm IDC, vendors shipped 100 crore smartphones in 2013, up 38.4 % from 72 lakh in 2012. In the fourth quarter alone, 29 lakh smartphones were shipped globally.
Smartphones accounted for 55% of all mobile phone shipments in 2013, up from 42% in 2012. Among the top trends driving smartphone sales are large screen devices and low cost. Primarily, cheap devices are driving sales volumes worldwide.China and India are quickly moving toward a point where smartphones priced at less than Re. 9000/- make up a majority of shipments, bringing a solid computing experience to many.
Total smartphone shipments had reached 50 lakh units globally in 2011 and doubling it in just two years shows strong demand and vendor strategies to highlight smartphones. In the smartphone space globally, Samsung leads the tally followed by Apple, Huawei, Lenovo and LG.
