The CBI probe into the high-profile CWG scam, one of the biggest loots of public money in recent memory, is reaching nowhere as the agency has failed to find any evidence to prosecute the officials involved in the Rs.8,000 crore scam.
While the top guns like Suresh Kalmadi and Lalit Bhanot are facing the heat, the Delhi government officials may come out clean in the scam. The CBI had filed chargesheets only in 4 cases out of the 18 registered by it. In three other instances, the agency has recommended the closure of the case. Most such cases are related to the city infrastructure created during the CWG games.
The CBI is likely to give a clean chit to the government officials despite the Shunglu Committee’s recommendations on the CWG scam. The panel had recommended action against them for their alleged role in misappropriation. The Committee had made strong observations against the Delhi government saying that its delayed decisions caused huge losses. According to the panel, inflated cost estimates without bidding, ill-conceived projects giving undue benefit to contractors and cartelisation indicated massive corruption.
