Oscar Pistorius, who wrote sports history by becoming the first double amputee athlete to participate in the Para Olympics, has been charged with murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. She was fatally shot at his home in Pretoria. Pistorius told the police that it was an accident and that he had mistaken her for an intruder.
The two were a couple and were frequently seen together at social events.
Pistorius, 26, had won two golds and a silver at last year's London Paraolympics. At the 2012 Olympics, he was able to reach the 400-meter semifinal and compete in the 4 x 400 meter relay race. Nicknamed Blade Runner, he runs using synthetic carbon fibre prosthetic blades.
Pistorius, born without fibulas, had both legs surgically removed below the knee before he turned 1. He struggled for long to compete with able-bodied athletes. In 2008, he qualified for the Beijing Games but was declared ineligible by the world athletics governing body because his blades were thought to give him an extra advantage.
