The fallen cycling icon Lance Armstrong has been dumped by Nike as brand ambassador due to the seemingly insurmountable evidence of his participation in doping and misleading Nike for more than a decade. He has also given up the chairmanship of his charity, Armstrong Foundsation, which is involved in charity work for cancer patients. The Foundation is one of the most highly respected in the USA.
The US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) had reported last week detailing widespread doping by Armstrong and his teams when he won the Tour de France seven consecutive times from 1999 to 2005. The purpose was to show why USADA had slapped life ban and ordered cancellation of 14 years of his career results --- including those Tour titles.
Armstrong's inspiring story of recovery from cancer and then winning the world's best-known bike race helped his foundation grow into one of the most popular in the country.
