Paul van Ass, the Indian National Hockey team coach, has been sacked by Hockey India. It has ended the ongoing saga of 'will he or won't he' come back to coach India. But the Hockey India (HI), president Narinder Batra maintains that he has not been terminated. Van Ass was supposed to join the Indian team undergoing a fitness camp at the SAI centre in Himachal Pradesh but he did not return to take charge, saying that HI had not sent him the air ticket.
It comes after the two had an altercation during the Hockey World League (HWL) Semi-Final after India's quarterfinal win over Malaysia in Antwerp. Hockey India has set up a special committee to evaluate the performance of the national teams in the HWL Semi-Finals. While the men's team reached the semis and finished fourth, the women's outfit was ousted from the quarterfinals and managed to end fifth. The committee, chaired by Harbinder Singh, will review the reports and relevant data to provide feedback.
