In the biggest sporting scandal ever, Swiss officials have arrested seven officials of FIFA, the international soccer body. Hours later, the Swiss Attorney General began a arallel investigation into the bidding process for the 2018 Russia World Cup and the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
The US Department of Justice alleges that sports executives allegedly paid more than $150 million in bribes to FIFA officials to secure broadcast rights. Nine soccer officials and five sports executives were indicted, and four have already pleaded guilty. This comes after allegations of corruption levelled against FIFA. Its longtime president, Sepp Blatter, has not been charged, and is still expected to win his planned bid for re-election being held soon.
