VVS Laxman, who was once described as Very Very Special Laxman for his crisis-management skills, has announced his retirement from the Indian Cricket Team. A 16- year old, near-perfect career, wrapped up neatly at a perfect juncture.
There's no denying that Laxman was deep into his career's twilight zone, and that he needed to take a cue from Rahul Dravid. VVS Laxman's timing has been his biggest asset – never in doubt, rather helping the Hyderabadi come up with the best of replies. And it's only ironical that the focus got shifted to the 'time' when Laxman passed through the exit doors of those monuments he erected for India.
Laxman batted right-handed and occasionally bowled off-spin. He was known for his superb timing and the ability to hit against the spin, reminiscent of his role model Azharuddin. In 2011, Laxman received the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award from the government of India.
