With a total tally of six medals, India put up its best show ever at an Olympics so far. 83 Indian athletes competed in 13 sports at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, the largest contingent India has ever sent to the Olympics.

 

 

 

Sushil Kumar was the flag bearer in the opening ceremony while M C Mary Com was the flag bearer at the closing ceremony.  India won 6 medals including 2 silvers and 4 bronzes. By far, this one has been the best medal tally so far for India in any Olympic tournament.

 Gagan Narang won the first medal for India at the Games, a bronze in the 10 metre air rifle event.

 

 

 

Vijay Kumar bagged a silver medal in the men's 25 m rapid fire pistol event and became the third man ever representing India to win an individual silver.

 

 

 

To cap it, Saina Nehawal won a bronze medal in women's singles in badminton to become the first Indian to win a medal in Badminton at the Olympics. She is also the second Indian woman to win an individual medal after Karnam Malleshwari's bronze medal in Weightlifting in 2000.

 

 

 


MC Mary Com of Manipur got India its fourth medal by winning a Bronze in the Women's Flyweight category in Boxing. She is the third Indian woman to win an Olympic medal.

Yogeshwar Dutt, by winning a bronze in the 60 Kg Freestyle Wrestling event, won India the fourth bronze and the fifth medal overall. This is the third individual medal in wrestling.

 

 

 

Sushil Kumar provided the icing on the cake and wrapped up the Indian show by won the Silver medal in 66 Kilogram Freestsyle Wrestling.  He is the first Indian to win an individual medal in back to back Olympics. He had won a bronze medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the same category.

 

 

 

 

MICHAEL PHELPS SWIMS TO THE HALL OF FAME

Michael Phelps was the most successful athlete athlete of the Games for the third Olympics consecutively. At the London tourney, Phelps won four golds and two silver medals. He is an American and the most decorated Olympian ever with 22 medals. Phelps also holds the all-time records for Olympic golds (18, double that of the next highest record holders), Olympic golds in solo events (11), and in solo male events (13). In winning eight gold medals at the 2008 Olympics, Phelps had earned the record for the most first-place finishes at any single Olympics.

 

 

 

He has won a total of 71 medals in major competitions --- 57 golds, 11 silvers, and 3 bronzes spanning the Olympics and other championships. Phelps's titles and spectacular performances have earned him the World Swimmer of the Year Award 6 times and American Swimmer of the Year Award 8t times. Earlier, his unique 2008 Olympic success had brought him Sports Illustrated magazine's Sportsman of the Year award.

 

 

 

 

USAIN "LIGHTNING" BOLT TO CHASE NO FURTHER GOALS

Usain "Lightning" Bolt is a Jamaican sprinter widely regarded as the fastest person ever. He won the 100 m gold for his fastest-ever 9.63 seconds to ensure his place in the sporting Hall of Fame.

 

 

He is the first man to hold both the 100 metres and 200 metres world records since the start of fully automatic time measurements. Along with his teammates, he also set the world record in the 4×100 metres relay. He is the reigning Olympic champion in these three events, the first man ever to win 6 Olympic gold medals in sprinting, and a five-time World champion. He was the first to achieve a "double double" by winning 100 m and 200 m titles at consecutive Olympics (2008 and 2012), and topped this through the first "double triple" (including 4x100m relays).

 

His achievements in sprinting have earned him the media nickname "Lightning Bolt".
