The arrest of two young girls after their Facebook post on Mumbai shutdown following Bal Thackeray’s funeral has angered the netizens. They have dubbed it social media hijack by the powerful and the fundamentalists. Social media have been abuzz with tweets and posts, with most referring to it as another move to curb freedom of speech on the Internet.
The two girls—Shaheen Dhada and Renu—were sent to 14-day judicial custody by a court before being granted bail within hours after they had furnished personal bonds.
The renowned communications specialist Alyque Padamsee has expressed shock at the arrest and the vandalism at the clinic of the girl’s uncle. Padamsee further said that the Constitution guarantees free speech and that none should be arrested on such flimsy grounds. Pavan Duggal, cyber law expert, shared his views and asked the government for a review of the law. He warned that it would be a real challenge to prove that the girls ' statement could incite communal disharmony and violence.
