As the monster Hurricane Sandy hit the coastline in the Eastern area of the USA tonight, the worst fears came true. With the seawater showing a surge of as much as 4 metres, the massive waves took away as they slammed into whatever came in the way. Damaged power lines, floating cars, submerged subways, blocked highways --- all tell the same story of widespread massive devastation.
Much of New York has been plunged into darkness by Superstorm Sandy that overflowed the city's waterfront, flooded the financial zone and subways and cut power supply to nearly 10 lakh people. Practically everything is at a standstill --- mass transit system, schools, stock exchanges, Broadway as the massive storm zeroed in on New York. Residents spent the day trying to salvage normal routines, jogging and snapping pictures of the water.
There were long queues at departmental stores, with people trying to stock up on whatever they could.
