India already had the dubious distinction of having the world’s second highest suicide rate. Now a new study reveals that West Bengal is the worst affected in India. In 2011, more than 1 lakh people committed suicide in India, with an average of 372 suicides a day. Financial stress, workplace stress, family and relationship tensions and academic pressures are some of the leading causes.
Among students especially, depression, stress and fear of failure are major reasons. A Lancet study says suicide is the second biggest cause of death among young people in India. The alarming figures indicate that the government and the society need to reach out and spread awareness to reduce the burden of stigma and trauma and give people a helping hand.
