Eric Hobsbawm, the strongest leftist intellectual voice in the history of communism is no more. He was 95.
Hobsbawm had enormous influence during the 1960s and 1970s, when his ideas helped to provide the intellectual basis for Left-wing revolutionary activism in the West. But though the details that made up his beautiful books were praised universally, there was no denying that he continued to defend totalitarian communism long after its expiry date. Hobsbawm’s reputation as the Grand Old Man of the Left got him invitations to travel and lecture around the world.
