After wooing Tamil Nadu, the Amma Mess is here in Bangalore to touch the Bangalorean hearts via their stomachs, of course. Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa's pet scheme, already a rage in Tamil Nadu for selling food dirt-cheap, has been inaugurated in Bangalore. The menu here is confined to idlis, at Re 1 a piece. The food stall bang opposite Kalasipalya Police Station, an area off KR Market had a bumper offer: free idlis, of which 6,000 were served to customers on Day 1. The canteen will serve hot idlis with sambar between 7 am and 10 am on Sundays initially but it will become an everyday affair after a few weeks.
About 200 such Amma eateries in Tamil Nadu serve around 2 lakh people a day, getting Jayalalithaa a big fan following. Women from self-help groups manage the outlets, while revenue officials maintain the accounts. Each canteen is by staffed 15 women, who're paid Rs 300 a day while the TN Warehousing Corp provides subsidized rice.
