The Midwestern parts of the USA are shivering with bone-chilling cold as the region witnesses the lowest temperatures in two decades. Weatherman have warned of life-threatening cold travelling eastwards. As icy conditions travel across the Midwest, thousands of flights have been cancelled or delayed. Schools in many stataes have been closed as normal life has been disrupted.
The coldest temperatures in almost two decades is likely to spread into the northern and central U.S.A. behind an arctic cold front, as per the National Weather Service. Coupled with strong winds, it is likely to result in life-threatening - 51 degrees Celsius conditions. In weather conditions this cold, frostbite can start on uncovered skin in minutes.
The chill is a result of infrequent alignment of weather conditions, allowing the Arctic polar vortex to be displaced unusually far south.
