The geographical indication (GI) tag for basmati rice for seven Indian states was ordered by the Intellectual Property Appellate Board (IPAB). The GI tag will be for Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Western UP and the two districts of Jammu and Kathua. A GI tag can be farm, natural or manufactured goods with a given quality or other characteristics due to its geographical origin. A GI registration gives its proprietor and users the right to its exclusive use and no unauthorised person can use the tag.
