Delhi is the world's second most populous city now, with a population of about 2.5 crore, as per a United Nations report. Tokyo takes the top spot with 3.8 crore people and is also expected to be the most populated by 2030. Delhi too is estimated to be the second most populated by 2030 with 3.6 crore people.
The World Urbanisation Prospects ranks Shanghai third, Mexico City fourth and Sao Paulo fifth on the list. Mumbai ranks 6th with a population of 2 crore, but is likely to be the 4th most populated by 2030 when its population hits 2.8 crore.
The report also says that just three countries — India, China and Nigeria — put together will contribute 37 % of the projected growth of the world’s urban population between 2014 and 2050. Asia, despite relatively low urbanisation, is home to 53 % of the world’s urban population, followed by Europe with % and Latin America and the Caribbean with 13 %.
