The world's population will rise to 970 crores in 2050 from the current 710 crores and India will overtake China as the world's most populous nation, a French study says. The bi-annual report by the French Institute of Demographic Studies (Ined) projects 10 - 11 billion people on the planet by 2099. The world's most populous nations are China (130 crore), followed by India (120 crore), the USA (31.62 crore), Indonesia (24.85 crore) and Brazil (19.55 crore). But if the scenario continues like the way it is, by 2050, India will overtake China with 160 crore, with China at 130 crore.
The projections run parallel to the forecasts by the UN, the World Bank and other prominent bodies. Africa would be home to a quarter of the world's population in 2050 with 250 crore people, more than double the current level of 110 crore.
