The Income Tax department plans to name and shame "chronic" tax defaulters by publicising their names and addresses. It is finalising the procedure and will upload the names on its website.
The department would focus on defaulters who have huge outstanding taxes and are absconding or dodging the taxman repeatedly. During a recent meeting of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the department had decided for it. The department would follow the 'Wanted' List uploaded by the CBI and the NIA on their portals. The I-T may also consider publishing the names of such defaulters in other media like newspapers but that would be done later.
