Dr. Ashoke Sen, a researcher at the Harish Chandra Research Institute (HRI) in Jhussi near Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh has been awarded the Fundamental Prize in Physics, the highest global honour for theoretical physics reserach. The award carries a citation and a cash component of $ 3 million (Rs. 15. 6 Crore).

The prize is awarded by the Fundamental Physics Prize Foundation, a non-profit organization. Started by physicist and internet entrepreneur Yuri Milner, it is the biggest physics honour and also the most lucrative in the world. The prize, three times bigger than the amount for the Nobel, is also dubbed as the 'Russian Nobel'.

Ashoke Sen has made several original contributions to the string theory, including his landmark paper on strong-weak coupling duality or S-duality, which influenced the course of research in the field. His description of rolling tachyons has been influential in string cosmology. He has also co-authored many important papers on string field theory. His recent contribution includes the entropy function formalism for extremal black holes and its applications to attractors. His current research centres around the attractor mechanism and the microstates for black holes in string theory.
