Asoke Sen, a prominent theoretical physicist and string theorist working at the Harish Chandra Research Institute, Allahabad, has been honoured with the Breakthrough Prize for his contributions to mathematics. Last year, he had received the Fundamental Prize for his research contributions to string theory. The honour carries a cash component of Re. 18 Crore ($ 3 million) along with a citation. The prizes have been founded by Yuri Milner, Marc Zuckerberg, Sergei Page and Larry Brin.
Breakthrough Prizes are awarded for exceptional contributions to the field of theoretical sciences (physics, biology, cosmology, mathematics, astronomy, quantum theory etc.), which would otherwise not be recognised by Nobel Prize or other distinctions. This is so becsuse the Nobel is restricted to scientific contributiosn, which are backed by empirical evidence. For this reason only, Peter Higgs won the Nobel for physics some 49 years after his theory had predicted the existence of Higgs Boson, which was discovered about a year back at CERN, Geneva.
