The 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, has been shared by James E. Rothman (Yale University), Randy W. Schekman (California University) and Thomas C. Suedhof (Stanford University) "for their discoveries of machinery regulating vesicle traffic, a major transport system in our cells". The Nobel carries $1.2 m in cash.

The Nobel Committee has honoured them for "their discoveries of machinery regulating vesicle traffic, a major transport system in our cells" - a discovery that will help understand the release of insulin into the blood, communication between nerve cells and the way viruses like tetanus infect cells and kill thousands of children every year. Disturbances in this system have dangerous effects and cause  neurological diseases, diabetes and immunological disorders.
