In a hush-hush operation, Afzal Guru, mastermind of the Parliament attack, has been hanged to death at Jail no. 3 in the Tihar Jail Complex. The Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorist was hanged after his mercy petition had been rejected by the President.
As a precautionary step, some parts of the Kashmir Valley have been put under curfew.
Afzal had been awarded the death sentence by a Delhi court in December 2002 after being convicted of the conspiracy to attack the Parliament building. The death sentence was upheld by the Delhi High Court in 2003 and finally his review appeal was rejected by the Supreme Court years later. Nine security personnel were killed in the Parliament attack.
