In a sudden, dramatic twist, Nitin Gadkari, the BJP supremo, facing serious financial allegations against his company Purti, has crashed out of the race for BJP President. In his place, Rajnath Singh has been elected unopposed as the new President of the BJP.
Gadkari has issued a statement, saying that he did not want the allegations to adversely affect the BJP. Earlier, he was being strongly pushed by the RSS despite intra-party reservations and was all set for re-election before the BJP’s Yashwant Sinha decided to contest the BJP’s presidential polls.
Sinha’s move forced top BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley and M Venkaiah Naidu into a choosing a new candidate. After the meeting, Rajnath Singh’s name emerged as the consensus alternative. Rajnath Singh had served as BJP president till 2009 and is also considered close to the RSS and this fact seems to have tilted the balance in his favour.
