The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), the main opposition party in Haryaan, has got a rude jolt as its top leaders were convicted and arrested in the JBT recruitment scam.
Former Haryana CM Om Prakash Chautala and his son Ajay Chautala have been sent to Tihar Jail after their conviction in a recruitment scam case involving JBT teachers. Chautala and his son Ajay have been convicted by a CB) court in Rohini. The court has also convicted 53 others in the case.
The sentence is to be pronounced on Jan 22. The conviction and the arrest comes at a time, when the party is in poll mode for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The Assembly elections in Haryana are also due after the general elections in Oct 2014.
The CBI had formally charged them in June, 2008, in with the scam that took place in 1999-2000 when Chautala was the chief minister. Chautala had pressurised a senior official, Sanjeev Kumar, to tamper with the list of selected candidates by fudging the marks of certain favourites. Later, Sanjeev Kumar became a whistleblower in the Supreme Court and submitted before the list of those originally selected. He had further alleged that money had changed hands in the recruitment scam.
