December 21, 2012, will be just another day, the only difference being that it will be the day of winter solstice when sun is at the southernmost point of the sky and the amount of day time will be the shortest.
The doomsday stories have become hot around the globe in recent weeks, thanks to social networking sites and the Internet.
At the core of this rumour lies a belief that the ancient Mayan civilisation in Latin America had projected December 21, 2012 as the last day of their calendar and thereafter the earth’s life span would expire.
There is another one that a devastating collision between the earth and a planet of the yet-undiscovered solar system called ‘Niburu’, will wipe out the planet. There is no scientific basis that December 21, 2012 would have a solar maxima resulting in the reversal of the polarity of the earth’s magnetic field.
Another theory that speaks of a rare planetary alignment of earth, sun and the earth’s galactic centre, thereby causing a huge gravitational instability is also unfounded, say scientists.
Even by the Mayan calculations, December 21, 2012, is not the end of time. It is rather the end of an era which was of 5,125 years or 13 Bakhtuns, each Bakhtun being a little more than 393 years. At the end of the 13 Bakhtuns, the Mayans believed, a new era would begin. So just sit back and be reday to welcome the new era with open arms !
