The Election Commission has expressed its displeasure with the government’s cash transfer scheme. The commission has called it a “political and avoidable” initiative and has asked the government not to roll it out in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.
The commission had received a complaint on the government’s “game changer” scheme from the rival BJP. Elections are to be held in Gujarat, while the results of polls held last month in Himachal Pradesh are awaited.
The cash transfer scheme was to be rolled out initially in 51 districts of the country from 1 January 2013. The commission had expressed its objections last weekend, asking the government to respond. In its reply, the government had said that the announcement didn’t violate the model code of conduct and contained nothing new which was not in this year’s budget. But the commission did not buy the argument and delivered a ban verdict.
