Doctor, heal thyself !
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's exhortation "Money does not grow on trees" last week on television asking the countrymen to bear with him for the subsidy cut and the oil hike, may have sounded straight from the heart. But some RTI queries reveal the damning truth behind the curtains.
To celebrate the 3 years of UPA 2, the PM had hosted an official dinner in May. 2012 for around 600 guests, out of which 350 actually turned up. The government reply says that to feed the guests, a mind-numbing sum of Re 11 lakh plus @ 7741 /- per plate was paid to the catering agency. The menu, which features the choicest delicacies, would put a wealthy businessman's wedding menu to shame. A total of Re. 27 lakh plus was spent on the party, out of the taxpayers' money. It comes close on the heels of another similar revelation about the Planning Commission splurging Re. 35 lakh on sprucing up the officers' toilets in Yojana Bhawn.
While nobody would mind the PM having a good time celebrating his "survival", it is symptomatic of the disconnect between preaching and practicing on the part of the establishment. No surprise here, people never take the politicians seriously.
